2024 Preserve AZ Conference & Governor's Heritage Preservation Honor Awards, Prescott

The 2024 Preserve AZ Conference boasts two full days of programming geared to professionals, with continuing education credits when available, in the fields of historic preservation, archaeology, cultural resources management, architecture, and planning. The event is tailored for members of the public who are involved in historic preservation and archaeology through volunteer activities and non-profit or state and local board and commission membership. Programming is designed to attract elected leadership and staff of Arizona’s 22 Native American tribes, who have a special relationship to Arizona’s historic resources. The two days of general programming are supplemented by tours, activities, and pre-conference workshops.

The conference planning committee has chosen the theme for this year's conference: "Planning the Past, Preserving the Future."

This theme pays homage in a playful manner to Prescott, Arizona's Master Planning initiative, "Preserving the Past, Planning the Future." In 2024, much like Prescott and other municipalities, the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office finds itself engaged in a comprehensive planning endeavor. The concept of "planning the past" emphasizes the strategic foresight required for effective heritage preservation. It aligns with the preamble of the National Historic Preservation Act, which underscores the federal preservation program's primary aim: providing "a sense of orientation to the American people" for the future.

Effective heritage preservation demands deliberate action, whether through considerate zoning, financial incentives for private ownership and redevelopment, or the formulation of strategies to safeguard archaeological resources. The foundation of our future environments, both built and natural, hinges on the ability of our heritage resources to pave the way forward – a process that necessitates a meticulous plan. "Planning the Past" serves as a reminder that preservation isn't accidental; it's a deliberate and intentional undertaking. "Preserving the Future" acknowledges the indispensable role our heritage plays in shaping the Arizona of tomorrow. The conference planning team enthusiastically welcomes all session submissions related to the overarching theme of "planning."
